              PRAKRITI THE SCHOOL'S NATURE CLUB

The Nature Club, which was started informally in 1992, was formally launched in April 1993 on the occasion of Earth Day. It was the very first of this kind to be launched in schools in the UAE. It was founded by Mrs. Gayatri Raghwa and Mr. Karan Singh Raghwa, both teachers of geography. Since its inception, the club has become a beacon for other schools. It has merited honourable mention in the AGEDI as a model for other schools to follow. It now enjoys a good rapport with all the governmental and non-governmental agencies associated with environment protection.

The club was started with the aim to spread environmental awareness among the students and the community at large and also instil proper environmental ethics and behaviour among the young. These aims have been targeted through various programs and activities round the year.

programs and activities round the year:

Earth Day (April 22)

The Prakriti calendar of events for the new academic session began, as always, with the appointment of office bearers on Earth Day. The following were entrusted with badges of office by the Principal and the Headmistress at a special function:

In response to the WWF appeal to the public to pledge to save Earth, the Principal and the Headmistress set the ball in motion by recording their pledges on a special chart. Staff and students of grades 5 to 12 recorded their pledges on charts and these were displayed prominently in school. The response from students was stupendous and Prakriti hopes they honour their pledges in their day to day lives and show that every effort goes a long way.

Reaching out to the community

In conjunction with IKEA, students of grades 5-8 decorated 450 shopping bags with environment messages and handed them over to the store for distribution to the customers on Earth Day. This was one way of spreading awareness to the community at large.

Paper Recycling Campaign

Yet again, due to our concerted efforts to recycle paper, we were declared Second Runners Up by the Emirates Environment Group, Dubai for the year 2006-‘07.

Enviro Spellathon Results

Students of grades 2-8 took the Enviro Spellathon, an objective test of different levels based on various aspects of the local as well as global environment and conducted by the Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi, in February.

World Environment Day (June 5)

The focus for this year is in line with the UNEP theme on climate change, with the slogan, ‘Melting Ice – Hot Topic?’ Prakriti held an Inter Class Chart Display Contest for grades 5-12 based on this theme. Yet again, the students did us proud by doing a lot of research on the topics given to them and putting up a wonderful display. It was also heartening to learn from the students that they were indeed shocked to learn of the damage we have caused to the environment and that they would step up efforts to do their bit. The winners of this contest are:

Cutting down carbon emissions

In an effort to work towards our commitment to reduce carbon emissions, the school joined other schools in the capital and shut down power supply to the entire school for an hour in the morning to mark World Environment Day. This will be continued whenever the weather permits so that we can help make a difference, however small.

World Clean Up Weekend (Sep 15-16)

Ring pulls to prosthetic limbs!

Who ever thought those tiny bits of aluminium that are thrown ever so casually and glint the streets and pavements all over the city can come of good use? These are recycled and used to make artificial limbs!

The middle graders (classes 5 -8) have been asked to collect ring pulls from soft drink cans to contribute to this noble effort on the occasion of the World Clean Up Weekend.

Field Trips

Senior students went on a marine ecology trip, conducted by the Environment Agency- Abu Dhabi, in November. Needless to say, students were excited and overwhelmed to get hands –on experience of all the concepts and knowledge of the marine environment that they had only read about so far.

UNEP International Painting Competition

Primary and middle grade children will be participating in the 17th International Children’s Painting Contest on climate change and the efforts to mitigate its impact.

VOICES, the Literary & Debating Club

This club aims to provide students a platform to voice their opinions about various matters as also to perfect their oratorical skills. It trains them to express thoughts in powerful speech through elocution, declamation and debating.

'Voices', was officially instituted in 1999 with the specific aim of providing its students with the qualities of confidence, composure and capacity to adjust to new surroundings. The club organizes intramural competitions and also invites schools from all over the U.A.E to participate in the Inter school Debating Competitions. It provides the students a platform to meet others like them who with debating skills. Besides a coordinator who runs the club, students officiate as President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Public Relations Officer and Art Coordinator to help conduct events.

We hope to inculcate the will to improve, the need to strengthen and the voice to express themselves in students so that they can contribute and play effective roles in society at large.

Badminton and Table Tennis Club

The school auditorium is made available to students and members of the Indian community after school hours. Students are encouraged to improve their skills in these games and also enjoy socializing with other members.

Efforts to study all habitats in the UAE, courtesy BEA(Brief Summary)

This is the tenth year in succession that Abu Dhabi Indian School has been participating in the Shell BEA and we are grateful to Shell Markets, Middle East, The FEA and the Ministry of Education for providing us the great opportunity to study each of the habitats in the UAE.  We have been studying quite a few of them, namely, the sabkha, the mangroves, a wooded area in the city, the wadi.  This year we have studied the desert and the mountain ecosystems.  We intend completing our study of all the habitats and consolidating our studies to make it available as a  resource material for our students.  With the inclusion of UAE environment studies in the curriculum on the cards, we aim to provide our students first hand insights into the various ecosystems.  Our goal is to eventually post it online so that students all over the UAE and the world can access our resources for an in depth study of each of these habitats.

We have also tried to give our students the chance to keep abreast with the latest technology, by using a GPS to locate and map the area we surveyed.

We would like to place on record our gratitude to Shell Markets, the FEA, Ministry of Education and ERWDA for inspiring us and helping us carry out these studies as well as providing expert guidance and support whenever we needed it.

Organizing Inter and Intra School activities to promote Awareness

The Club organizes Coloring and Painting contests, Debates, Paper reading contests, Quiz , Cleanup campaigns etc. on different environmental occasions on a regular basis.

We are proud that through our sustained efforts we are able to cover wide-ranging topics from Biodiversity to recycling . Cleanups and so on to cater to the various student groups in our quest to promote Environmental awareness.

The club is the brainchild of Mrs. Gayatri Raghwa and Mr. Karan S. Raghwa who are also coordinators of the Club.

Literary & Debating Club

This club aims at improving the student's abilities in public speaking, helping them voice their feelings , hopes and aspirations. We train them to combine thoughts and words and to express them in powerful speech in elocution, declamation and debating . 'Voices', the debating club of the school was officially instituted in 1999 with a specific aim of providing its students with qualities of confidence, composure and capacity to adjust to new surroundings. The club organizes the competitions within and outside the school and invites schools from all over the U.A.E to participate in the Inter school Debating Competitions . It provides the students a platform to meet others like them who wish to develop debating skills and voices of their own. Student coordinators are the President ,Vice President , Secretary and Treasurer.

We hope to inculcate in the students a will to improve themselves, a need to strengthen themselves and a voice to express themselves so that they can contribute and have effective roles in the society at large.

Badminton and Table Tennis Club

The school auditorium is made available to students and members of the Indian Community after the school hours in the evening. The students are encouraged to improve their skills in the games and enjoy socializing with other members of the community.

Swimming Club

The swimming pool measuring 25mx12.5m with controlled temperature is an excellent facility for the Indian Community in Abu Dhabi.

It is a very popular hobby among the students and its members. Students who are trained during the school hours are given special training and practice to strengthen their skills and improve their stamina for swimming . Students of different age groups and members are seen enjoying and relaxing in the pool after a day's hard work.
